(and, of course, a freebie to celebrate!)<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Whoo- hoo! Summer break, here I am!! First of all, I have to give a true round of applause to all of you teacher folks who faithfully blogged during your last few weeks of school. I feel like I have been going a zillion m.p.h. for the past two weeks trying to collect all of my final grades, final projects, celebrating with a few school assemblies, field trips and end-of-the-year fun things in the classroom. By the time I would get home, I was zapped! So if you're one of those dedicated bloggers during EOY activities, know you are admired!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">That being said, we ended our school year in such fun ways and I'm linking up with <a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2013/05/five-for-friday-linky-party-may-24th.html">Doodle Bugs Teaching</a> to show my Top Five from this final week of school. This group was pretty challenging, but I will definitely miss their distinct little personalities and all the major growth my babies made this year. The last days of school this week I made sure to plan fun activities so we could enjoy our time together and end with great memories. Here are some of the best from my highlight reel:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>*Chalk pictures outside and bubbles outside:</b> The more outdoor activities, the better! I picked up bubbles from the Dollar Tree and gave each of my students their own bottle. After watching their reaction, I feel like I should inform their parents to forget the fancy iPods and Wii games...all you need is bubbles :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>*Last Day Flowers</b> delivered from My Man. Isn't he the sweetest? :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRYnh0sMvqQO7aOviT3mZNwKc8SfdR6uPVwLUOaJK0cTbfo97Zdn_bpyN2j8Zg5OWO494FsyeoynxjMo6YxOA9XPpoyaGhbUVpMXXH3hx63cq5J0AXTCz0aXwiUnubMCqfTEDmaJFUT7s/s1600/photo+(22).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRYnh0sMvqQO7aOviT3mZNwKc8SfdR6uPVwLUOaJK0cTbfo97Zdn_bpyN2j8Zg5OWO494FsyeoynxjMo6YxOA9XPpoyaGhbUVpMXXH3hx63cq5J0AXTCz0aXwiUnubMCqfTEDmaJFUT7s/s320/photo+(22).JPG" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
(and would you look at that nearly-packed up room in the background?? I impressed myself yesterday with how quickly and efficiently I packed and cleaned!)<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>*Money Movie Party:</b> The first grade team sets up a theater room and a concession room. We give all students an allowance of manipulative money that they get to put in their carefully decorated paper wallets. Each student must purchase a movie ticket to see the movie, and then can purchase treats at the concession stand, such as popcorn, juice boxes, small cake treats, etc. This is such a fun way to practice saving and spending money and the kiddos feel so grown up as they make their responsible choices!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>*Construction Paper Sorting:</b> Ok, so you know how construction paper companies STILL don't understand how teachers want/need paper sorted by colors, not in a pretty rainbow pattern? It's so frustrating trying to quickly go through packs of paper to pull out 23 sheets of red for a holiday craft, only to turn around and do it again for green. So one of my teammates came up with a fun way to have the students help sort. We place one sheet of paper on desks around the room, the more space between the desks, the better. For each color represented, we have a student sit behind that paper to become the "Paper Manager". The rest of the students are handed a random stack of assorted colors of construction paper and are released to sort each color at the correct desk. The Paper Manager sits behind her color and carefully organizes the paper into a neat stack so that when we are all done, it's easy to store on my shelves. In the end, I can collect a large stack of red, orange, yellow, etc., so that next year my paper is sorted and easy to grab! It's so helpful to me and the students love having a job that truly requires little supervision and instruction from me.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>*Classroom Awards:</b> At my school, we have an awards assembly near the end of the year. It's special and fun, but it really only recognizes the older students in my building. Because of that, I created my own classroom awards so that each one of my special students gets a unique award that we can celebrate in our classroom. I had so much fun creating these! There are <b>36 awards total</b>, with one blank award included. These are available for both First Grade and Second Grade! Here are a few samples:</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Oh goodness me! I went and took a week off from blogging without even realizing it! I tell ya, time is a funny thing at this time of the school year. On one hand, it goes by waaay too quickly and we have so much to do! On the other hand, we still aren't to summer...yet. Anyways, I'm welcoming myself back with the May Currently from <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/">Oh Boy 4th Grade</a>.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkQ7MyAMwim_Munsk4_vB2cRKE4-ik1aFLOsv36aLG4_lg1gH9EJkrvZCYPpFymxbOYLSfxB8TYr3BXYkALoPPeI173J2DCxq8jIwuu0uTgqOJ4AU6ejwLzShKuI7HoM1C1lS6TZnZocg/s1600/May+Currently.001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkQ7MyAMwim_Munsk4_vB2cRKE4-ik1aFLOsv36aLG4_lg1gH9EJkrvZCYPpFymxbOYLSfxB8TYr3BXYkALoPPeI173J2DCxq8jIwuu0uTgqOJ4AU6ejwLzShKuI7HoM1C1lS6TZnZocg/s640/May+Currently.001.jpg" width="480" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Listening:</b> I love feel-good movies and The Blind Side is definitely in that category. I'm a total repeater when it comes to watching my favorite movies, so this is perfect to keep me company with the lovely stack of papers in front of me that need grading tonight.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Loving:</b> I seriously am such a happy girl! The school year is almost over, I have some amazing summer travel plans laid out, and I had a fun day shopping with my mom today. Other good news? I can breathe again! This past week I was hit hard with a nasty sinus infection and I think I can finally say I am on the mend. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Thinking:</b> Whoa, baby, is this a busy time in the school year or what? I often tell my non-teacher friends that this is our "tax season" (I also say this at the beginning of the school year too. Hmm, maybe our whole career is a "tax season"...). I have a gazillion things I need to do, both for school and my personal life, but they are all such fun and promising tasks that I can't help but feel happy as I move at the speed of light to try to get everything done. :)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Wanting:</b> I've got some serious procrastination issues going on tonight. I've done a wonderful job of cleaning the kitchen, folding laundry and now blogging...but not so much with the papers I need to grade. I have set a goal that as soon as I'm done with this post I'll grade for half an hour and then have a Pinterest and teacher blog break. Must. Use. Self. Control. To. Stay. Focused.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Needing:</b> I need chocolate! But then again, when don't I?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Summer Bucket List:</b> Ooooh goodness I have some FUN summer plans! First of all, I started my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Liz-Fowler">TPT store</a> just this past March and have had a blast creating products. It's seriously a joy for me to create things that I know will be perfect for my classroom and see other teachers feel the same way. I like to take my time and make 'em great though, and unfortunately time has not been on my side lately. This summer will be a chance for me to get these ideas in my head onto my computer and into my store.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I also have amazing travel plans! My Man and I are heading to the Dominican Republic at the end of this month for a wedding and I could not be happier! Toes in the sand after a successful end to a school year? I'll take it! We also have a few other quick trips planned this summer and I'm excited for those as well.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Lastly, this summer I cannot wait to catch up on my reading! I love books, but once again have had some time issues to get much reading done. Do you have any great book suggestions? I'm open to almost anything, so please share! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-size: x-large;">1. This week definitely needed a caffeine boost. What better way than a piping hot Starbucks on a rainy day?</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">4. High School students came to visit our class to teach our kiddos sign language. Not only were my little babies excited to show me all the signs they learned (Ms. Fowler, this means giraffe! Watch this! I can sign "popcorn"!), but it was also an excellent teaching opportunity about accepting differences in others. We strayed from my lesson plans to talk about differences in communication, sight, learning and body types and why we need to always look at what is on the inside of a person. My little ones were so earnest to share their hearts! I'm one proud teacher :)</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I'm linking up with <a href="http://flyingintofirst.blogspot.com/2013/04/lets-get-acquainted.html">Flying Into First Grade's "Let's Get Acquainted" party</a> again! This week's theme is to share our three favorite areas in our classrooms!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1. My calendar board</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6TF7O2pfTbD3WLOSDwBKNOODztLs5oCeN56NAEarEFNG72ZVM45KP0VWJYI6A_EFqNwV3UKYIBRWm2XrNH0-R3Yb8d82oOAFkF9RSUtORBbbEr7Q2BWIajFm4TW4HVvFfdQ67DCtSHDw/s1600/image_2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6TF7O2pfTbD3WLOSDwBKNOODztLs5oCeN56NAEarEFNG72ZVM45KP0VWJYI6A_EFqNwV3UKYIBRWm2XrNH0-R3Yb8d82oOAFkF9RSUtORBbbEr7Q2BWIajFm4TW4HVvFfdQ67DCtSHDw/s320/image_2.jpeg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I think this area is special to me for many reasons. Our morning meetings are centered around this calendar board, and that is one of my favorite times with the kiddos as we share about ourselves. As much as I love teaching, it's also so worthwhile to take a little time to truly get to know my little ones. I also feel proud of this board because I spent a summer painting (yes painting!) all of my bulletin boards. This bright blue took forever to go on just right, but in the end it was worth it! </span>(can you say buh-bye to trying to make huge butcher paper fit perfectly?!) <span style="font-size: x-large;"> I think having a calendar board like this one is also an excellent resource for students to use for math, science, reading and everything else!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">2. "Watch Us Grow" board:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8b3q8V_tWPsj0zzQpkIEdYFrNqlTY6vQncbKjFjAc2xKff7glWcQXu7QLFWi-WZtFTPiNmr0B_iKdDgRq-tcbkPX0nxrJoC8UotKsVvmu99d5eU22v5I0EyQd4AkUg1YEkGHyuVhnIuk/s1600/image.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8b3q8V_tWPsj0zzQpkIEdYFrNqlTY6vQncbKjFjAc2xKff7glWcQXu7QLFWi-WZtFTPiNmr0B_iKdDgRq-tcbkPX0nxrJoC8UotKsVvmu99d5eU22v5I0EyQd4AkUg1YEkGHyuVhnIuk/s320/image.jpeg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">My classroom door is settled back into a nice little nook and I can decorate both sides of my "doorway". My mom also happens to be a first grade teacher (I swear, teaching is genetic!) and I always admired this idea that she does every year with her classroom. Each month, I pose the kiddos to take a class photo and display them as we go through the school year, with the month written at the bottom. It's so fun to be able to see how the kiddos change from August to May! They also feel quite grown up when they look back on how many teeth they have lost since then and how awesome their newest haircuts look now :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">3. My Art Museum</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGnbdu8P7EOPstBDU1c5EJlBePv0JRsK8Xfk4YNquVWY0PnzODw4hy3KanEvbdajLsOy4XgiYWDAuSkih1NAj9tkVXwu3WGGs_f7fEv68dT-f8_xpTinrcH3m_a52D-azJcoACO6jwe4k/s1600/image_1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGnbdu8P7EOPstBDU1c5EJlBePv0JRsK8Xfk4YNquVWY0PnzODw4hy3KanEvbdajLsOy4XgiYWDAuSkih1NAj9tkVXwu3WGGs_f7fEv68dT-f8_xpTinrcH3m_a52D-azJcoACO6jwe4k/s320/image_1.jpeg" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">While this may not be anything I created personally, it is one of my favorite parts of my classroom. Whenever I'm feeing low or stressed, at some point in the day I can't help but catch one of these lovelies out of the corner of my eye and I remember why I do my job each day. I think it's easy to sometimes get caught up in the overload of Common Core/Report Cards/IEP Meetings/Parent Conferences and while we don't forget why we teach, we may not see as much of the joy as we'd like. These pieces of art bring me joy :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Aaaaaand here is your freebie!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_PF6WjNai_nNYeQ8oQ1vuTaNpCRZE_V1AKF6rQ55YRkG2taxj8noJ4S1sR1tk9lQ5wYc3y_0fp9CBIRsTbCsCiTVsb9G5-rMa6dXyYEX9oY-mAOYyRE7mojqnse9F6RvXmzhrkFEhHGw/s1600/photo+(20).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_PF6WjNai_nNYeQ8oQ1vuTaNpCRZE_V1AKF6rQ55YRkG2taxj8noJ4S1sR1tk9lQ5wYc3y_0fp9CBIRsTbCsCiTVsb9G5-rMa6dXyYEX9oY-mAOYyRE7mojqnse9F6RvXmzhrkFEhHGw/s320/photo+(20).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Just a simple addition dice roll, but prettied up for spring! Students roll a die (or two dice, or my personal favorite, the double-die) and create an addition problem to write in the boxes. Students may then count up the dots, use their number lines or mental math to solve. For a challenge, I have my kiddos roll the die twice to get one addend (EX: Student rolls a five and then a four. She writes nine in the first box). This helps them practice more math facts up to adding 12. You can print these out as worksheets, or you can put laminate them or put them in a page protector for the students to use over and over with dry erase markers. Click the image to download!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">This week we started studying fractions, and <i>whoo-hoo</i> are my babies loving it! I'm so proud of them! We started with the basics of 1/2 and 1/4 fractions. To help them physically see fractions in everyday objects, I treated each student to a graham cracker. I gave the students a piece of construction paper that was creased in half and labeled on each side and challenged them to figure out how to put the exact same amount of graham cracker on each side. I loved that some students broke their crackers the "short way" while some others broke theirs the "long way"! We were able to discuss that both were correct forms of halves and that was because they both showed one piece out of two equal pieces.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7BVHgbNxOgNoo8_rBYgp_yOpPv-Ue7iNNV1Dh9UxtBXvTmpdTzVKfrOj5qyTXptX-CbSAeMUuNiVugVD4rdkmleVNSQZseGr3u5-i0Ktar_fI_nAq4Be4Z1Hxag5sWcxJrctcsRVldzo/s1600/image.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7BVHgbNxOgNoo8_rBYgp_yOpPv-Ue7iNNV1Dh9UxtBXvTmpdTzVKfrOj5qyTXptX-CbSAeMUuNiVugVD4rdkmleVNSQZseGr3u5-i0Ktar_fI_nAq4Be4Z1Hxag5sWcxJrctcsRVldzo/s320/image.jpeg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Next, each student was given a piece of construction paper that was divided into fourths. I asked the students to figure out how to divide their crackers so they had four equal pieces. By now, we were really rolling! Some of my budding mathematicians even made the connections that 2/4 was the same as 1/2! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The next day, we reviewed what we knew about halves and fourths and then discussed thirds, fifths and sixths. I explained to the students that any number could be the denominator as long as all the pieces were equal, but these are some of the most common fractions. These would also be the fractions we would use in our Ice Cream Fraction Craftivity!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">To make it fair and still ensure all students were understanding what different fractions were, I wrote the numbers 2-6 on scrap pieces of paper and put them in a bucket. The students drew out a number and that became their denominator for their Ice Cream Fraction Craftivity. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">We then decided on the flavors of ice cream they could choose:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;">Pink - Strawberry</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: x-large;">Green - Mint Chocolate Chip</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: orange; font-size: x-large;">Orange - Orange</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #8e7cc3; font-size: x-large;">Purple - Berry</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-size: x-large;">Brown - Chocolate</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">White - Vanilla</span></div>
<br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Then I put them to work to make their fractions out of ice cream scoops (each scoop was an equal piece of the whole ice cream cone). The kiddos were very thoughtful in their ice cream flavor selection and were mindful of what they wanted their fraction cones to look like. </span>(I wonder if if they would be this thoughtful about all their classwork if I tied the lessons to desserts...)<span style="font-size: x-large;"> After carefully cutting and assembling, each student wrote what his or her ice cream cone was made up of in terms of fractions.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large;">My senior year of college, my beloved Jayhawks won the Orange Bowl in football and the National Championship in basketball! I also lived in a house with six other sorority sisters and we felt like the world was ours. It was definitely a great year, and I'd have to say the National Championship goes down as one of the best memories of my life. </span></div>

If you question whether or not I'm an optimist or not, look at the Cowboys' season and the heartbreak they put us through and the fact that I'm still a diehard fan. Today I met with my first grade team and we planned our final field trip of the year to the Humane Society. We thought this would be a wonderful way to continue our Character Trait lessons about caring, responsibility, trustworthiness, citizenship and respect, not to mention kiddos love animals! I'm so excited to go on this field trip and see all the sweet animals. I have a soft spot for rescuing animals. After all, my baby was a humane society kitty once :)</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Happy Sunday! I'm linking up with <a href="http://flyingintofirst.blogspot.com/2013/04/yay-for-tennessee-bloggers-and-lets-get.html" target="_blank">Flying into First Grade</a> for her weekly Let's Get Acquainted Linky. It's seriously such a fun way to learn all about fellow bloggers! <span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This week's topic is: Stranded on an Island - What three things would you have to take with you?</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1. It's sad to say, but I'd definitely need my iPhone. I think we can all agree that these handy Smart Phones have become a way of life.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">2. My Man :) He just got home from traveling for work for nearly three weeks, so I'm definitely not letting him out of my sight again so soon!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">3. A Beach Bag! Hey, if I'm going to be on an island, I'm turning it into a vacation! I'd have the bag full of sunscreen, gossip magazines, a good book, headphones, and fun beach games. Ok, so maybe I'm stretching this a little bit because the bag holds more than one item...but a beach vacation sounds so amazing right now!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What would you bring? Link up <a href="http://flyingintofirst.blogspot.com/2013/04/yay-for-tennessee-bloggers-and-lets-get.html" target="_blank">here</a>!</span></span><br />

Sunday was a wonderful day to celebrate Easter. It's one of my favorite holidays for many reasons, but I was only able to snap a picture of the "sweetest" aspect. Apparently everyone knows my great love of the Reese's Eggs and I was even given a giant mega-egg! (which, I'll admit, kind of intimidates me. That's a lot of pressure to eat that hefty treat!). As I was taking a picture of my sweets, the Easter Cat apparently decided it was the perfect time to photobomb. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">This week and next, I'll be teaching my students about words with the -ow and -ou sounds. I'm sure many of you teach in districts that are transitioning into Common Core and if you're like me, you're also getting a new report card to go with it. I have been working to create literacy activities that can help me assess in small groups through activities and see exactly how students are learning while still collecting the necessary data for our standards-based report card. Here is a sample of what my kiddos and I have been having fun with this week! <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Cows-Out-on-the-Town-Sounds-of-ou-and-ow-Word-Word-and-Literacy-Activities" target="_blank">Click here to snag it and download a preview on TPT.</a></span></div>

I can have some of my babies that need extra attention work on only a few cards at a time, or I can have my students that need more of a challenge play the game and use the word in a sentence. Meanwhile, what none of the students know is I'm gathering some wonderful data for their report cards! Muah-ha-ha!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I don't want to jinx anything.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">But... it's finally starting to feel like spring again around here! The snow has melted! The sun is out! I didn't even need a jacket outside!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Naturally, it was the perfect time to do some spring activities in first grade.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">First up was our math lesson about symmetry. We found things around the classroom that had a line of symmetry. We thought of things on the playground that could have symmetry. We discussed why certain objects may look alike, but are not symmetrical. But seriously, what better way to teach students about symmetry during the spring that to make butterflies?! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I traced the pattern on construction paper for them (to avoid the "accidentally traced on the edges instead of the fold and now I have two pieces" scenario). The students cut out the butterflies and then in <u>small groups</u> I called them to use my Paint Dots to decorate only one half of the butterfly <i>(because if we want it to be the exact same on the other side we can't decorate both or they'd look kinda different, Ms. Fowler!)</i>. I've done this before with regular paint and brushes, but this was a little more controlled. My only suggestion is to MOVE QUICKLY and be ready to squeeze a little extra paint out so that it will transfer to the other side when you fold the butterfly in half. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I let the students fold over their butterfly and press down all over so the paint would transfer, but for a few I had to "touch up" because the paint was too light. Usually I don't like to intervene with student art, but I did want them to understand that if an object is symmetrical, it needs to be the exact same on both sides. I think these turned out pretty cute :)</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Another activity we did was simple and fun and is actually two games in one! On plastic Easter Eggs, I wrote addition problems in permanent marker, with the addends on one half of the egg and the sum on the other half. For the first activity, I split the eggs up and gave each student one half. They had to find the student who had the missing part of their math problem and match up their egg halves to make the equation true. Because I purposely had more than one egg with the same answer, the students could not rely solely on matching the egg colors. Once they found a correct match, the students held their egg in the air and waited until everyone was matched and we could mix it up again. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The second activity was in the form of Quiz-Quiz-Trade. I gave each student a full egg and had them turn the halves so the answer was not visible when they read the addition problem. We play Quiz-Quiz-Trade all the time using cards, so the students LOVED using eggs to jazz things up a bit! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The students mixed (and they know to do this silently) and partnered up with the closest student near them. Student A showed the addition problem to Student B. Student B answered it correctly (way to go! says Student A) and then Student B shows Student A the addition problem on her egg. Student A answers correctly (you're awesome! says Student B) and they trade eggs, only to partner up with another student. I have found this is a good activity for 5 to 10 minutes or self-control tends to be forgotten :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Do you have any creative spring math or reading activities? I'd love to hear about them!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Ah, the first day back to school after Spring Break. It was soooo good to see all my little guys again and hear all about their adventures over break. We shared laughs, had an awesome math discussion about polygons, worked on suffixes and played some of my </span><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/March-Madness-Math-Reading-and-Basketball-FUN" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: x-large;">March Madness activities</span></a><span style="font-size: x-large;"> in small groups. That being said, I'm now quite tired :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">While today was a good day overall, I should mention we had indoor recess.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">All day. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Because it was snowy outside.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Say whaaaat? It's March 25! I want to feel the sunshine on my face and see flowers blooming! </span>(and have the kids run off some energy outside...) <span style="font-size: x-large;"> Lucky for me, Amanda over at <a href="http://mrspauleyskindergarten.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Mrs. Pauley's Kindergarten</a> has started the cuuuuutest Spring Fever Giveaway and I was fortunate enough to participate along with some amazing bloggers! <span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<b><u><span style="font-size: x-large;">Person:</span></u></b><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">My Man is such a serious blessing to me. He is absolutely my best friend, my greatest encourager, and can always make me laugh. He listens to me and supports me through everything - not to mention he comes from a teacher family, so he "gets it" when I have my school conversations! Ah, I just love him!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u>Place:</u></b> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Lawrence, Kansas, home of the Kansas Jayhawks. If you have read anything on my blog, you've probably noticed I'm a huge Jayhawk fan (especially basketball!). I earned both of my degrees from KU. I spent countless hours camping out for great basketball seats. I met my best friends through classes, my sorority, and campus ministry groups at KU. I proudly walked down the hill at graduation and knew I was a Jayhawk for life. I try to visit Lawrence whenever I can, and I still get goosebumps when I drive down the big hill to campus. So many wonderful memories!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">5. <b>YOU! </b> Last week was the first week I've ever linked up to Five for Friday and one of my first linky parties in general. I was seriously so touched at the kind comments I received and just how sweet and thoughtful you all are! It's sometimes scary to try a new thing (in my case, this blog) but so many of you reached out to offer your wisdom and support! It's the little things that keep us teachers positive and strong, and the kind words definitely kept me in high spirits!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">I love having posters like these back by my literacy table. I hang them up for the week we are focusing on the new sounds for student reference. Not only do the students have constant exposure, but they start making connections to the posters with what they read. <i>(Hey! Blew has the -ew sound like Drew!)</i></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">My students and I both enjoy word sorts. I try to do a word sort in each literacy unit so students know what to do during their center rotations without a lot of instruction. The exposure to so many words with our letters/sounds of the week is awesome!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Recording sheets are a lifesaver for me this year. I'd like to say I have time to monitor students during centers in between each small group to assess their knowledge, but the truth is that with my larger class size this year I just can't get to all my little ones every day. By using recording sheets, I can see the students I was unable to observe outside of small groups and check to see how they are understanding the concepts.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Write the Room and Memory Game both have cuuuute cards to go with them. Both of these activities are perfect for my classroom. I like to get my students out of their seats and have time to assess while not doing direct instruction, so Write the Room is perfect about halfway through the week. I can stick close to my little guys that need more instruction, but still see how all the other students are doing easily.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">My kiddos love - and I mean LOVE - Memory Games. I often use this in small group, during after-school tutoring, and as an activity students can do when they finish work early. I tell ya, when they play Memory I don't have any arguments, poor behavior, or loud voices! The students enjoy the game and I enjoy the positive learning aspect. This classic game is definitely a keeper.</span></div>

<a href="http://brigidsdailylessonlog.blogspot.com/2013/03/spring-break-sale.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFJRPvYIte182BerIUGPKYJYoU0B1Sed_y5rCHImLkyTYHRfT5FH-ISCDb85QjdkYUXSVLll1fTqkZnrc0HBfHsP9sKRusM5rtoBhjdtHBTzh-YKU_nlDgHzMyw2Ky2lLOxgqPq2s2Ab8/s320/Screen+Shot+2013-03-15+at+11.01.34+AM.png" width="312" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
<br />
Ah, what a happy first day of spring!! Ok, so the weather didn't quite get the memo that it should be absolutely perfect outside, but I still feel oh-so-wonderful on my Spring Break humpday.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
I've had a wonderful time of fun and relaxation on my break so far: a trip to see college friends, my brother coming for a visit, actually sitting down to drink my coffee instead of sips in between helping students, and being able to stay up like a real adult (I forgot how funny <i>Friends </i>was!). But today was earmarked to be different. Today was Cleaning The Classroom Day.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
I know, it's spring break and I should stay away from school. The problem is, this classroom of mine has become a bit of a stressor. When I moved into my classroom, I was blessed to have it completely stocked: books, guided reading ideas, teacher idea books, recess games and more. I was one lucky lady! However, as I've started collecting my own resources that work best for my teaching style and as we all start to shift to Common Core, I've noticed that these resources I inherited were only collecting dust. I had to cut the apron strings and donate them to storage or other teachers they might be better suited for. I worked for a loooong while in my classroom today and WOW! I feel SO much better now! Not only does my room look even better than when I first moved in, but I feel organized and ready to finish the year strong. Not to mention it's one less thing to do this summer... (whoever said teachers only work nine months?)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
Here is a question though: Last year, I snagged a spiffy drawer unit <a href="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/product/10+drawer+rolling+organizer.do?green=2ddef000-b355-35fb15-de76-0c56838e9e03#" target="_blank">like this one</a> on a great sale. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzMZ_-vXMv4T-jcmk0kF6Ityi7VusV0YMYcnGmZ0vHLZLfag9pihG7z5l62sox8WkiGdvuXp4IkAxvVsgw4TALh3kmqLXVwd31m8xAxGSazTTz8YvQxVkT4iJDNTzJJUnuLao4zUxbZb0/s1600/drawers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzMZ_-vXMv4T-jcmk0kF6Ityi7VusV0YMYcnGmZ0vHLZLfag9pihG7z5l62sox8WkiGdvuXp4IkAxvVsgw4TALh3kmqLXVwd31m8xAxGSazTTz8YvQxVkT4iJDNTzJJUnuLao4zUxbZb0/s320/drawers.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
I love it and oh, the ideas of what I can do with it! Unfortunately, I just can't figure out what it's best purpose is. Currently I have some guided literacy activities in there...and that only takes up two drawers. Does anyone have an awesome idea of what I can do with this? I definitely don't want to part with it, but right now it's just taking up some space.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
While my Spring Break is halfway over...wait, I mean it's only halfway beginning... I still have a bucket list! Here is what I want to accomplish over the next few days:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
<b><strike>1. De-clutter my classroom and organize! </strike></b> (I maaaay like to add things to lists just to cross them off...)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
<b>2. Turn my spare bedroom into a lovely guest suite. </b> I moved in August. August, ya'll. The tax season for teachers. I apparently only had enough energy to move in and unpack everything else, but that spare room is still so...blah. Time to decorate!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>3. Go to a few classes at the Y.</b> I love group classes (so motivating!) and honestly, it's so much better during the daytime hours when they aren't quite as full. I like to move around!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
<b>4. Cheer on my Jayhawks Friday night!</b> Rock Chalk!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
<b>5. Spend time with family.</b> I love that I live close enough to my family that I can see them fairly easily. That being said, it's hard to juggle after a long day of teaching. Now that I have some time, I hope to be able to not worry about a schedule and just catch up with the people who mean the most.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
<b>6. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.</b> And I mean EVERY night. I love these breaks because I feel so rested after. So far, I'm rockin' with this goal. :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">One of my favorite things to read on blogs are the little random bits, like Five for Fridays. I'm excited to join in on the fun this week!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">1. A rainy weekend made it the perfect couple of days to stay cuddled up inside. This is how my Saturday morning started out and I loved it!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHU8w5h8urB3YwfPxmmNFeCto7ch0jcpePqLt8h3Y56mD7uN1xmgUbGGglpBzPts6DwrwO2ov7DTi-gHDAlbEwoNhcPehtJtplcTG934FAb-CqPjzr22JshMjKRQL1exOqwB5bX5DOa1Q/s1600/photo-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHU8w5h8urB3YwfPxmmNFeCto7ch0jcpePqLt8h3Y56mD7uN1xmgUbGGglpBzPts6DwrwO2ov7DTi-gHDAlbEwoNhcPehtJtplcTG934FAb-CqPjzr22JshMjKRQL1exOqwB5bX5DOa1Q/s320/photo-1.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">2. My Man celebrated his birthday on Monday and was sooo excited about his new shoes I gave him that he had to try them on right away. Isn't he so stinkin' cute? :)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvCo8TeQdEgB-hrXMixrwLHQ4_qTsBd_Wk8PxAXVG-0w-hzNPDmMoSqTpkj5anZoxGeCGKOYS7SokpUwggyT9wTUR6uBHkrxiWkZKNpRZ88sBojXJoSj9aRAMb1P6mxnowvmwi8xtrfk8/s1600/photo-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvCo8TeQdEgB-hrXMixrwLHQ4_qTsBd_Wk8PxAXVG-0w-hzNPDmMoSqTpkj5anZoxGeCGKOYS7SokpUwggyT9wTUR6uBHkrxiWkZKNpRZ88sBojXJoSj9aRAMb1P6mxnowvmwi8xtrfk8/s320/photo-3.JPG" width="240" /></span></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIJ7DlVeiGs53XszNJQ-47IaNylhG9WnauuGTeY0emNSjItYeF7wnZ4RvhkrFth-w4L4yk-n-qDUVDbnJOesi62MXqhU5d_xD2V4wHLXwpxRMAuwwhjdEE7xNG4SSEyC00kgkMmwVORGA/s1600/photo-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIJ7DlVeiGs53XszNJQ-47IaNylhG9WnauuGTeY0emNSjItYeF7wnZ4RvhkrFth-w4L4yk-n-qDUVDbnJOesi62MXqhU5d_xD2V4wHLXwpxRMAuwwhjdEE7xNG4SSEyC00kgkMmwVORGA/s320/photo-2.JPG" width="240" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">3. <i>The Bachelor</i> finale was also a highlight of the week (DVRd to give all celebration to My Man on Monday, of course). I couldn't help but get a little teary eyed at how happy Catherine and Sean seemed. I know it's reality television at its finest, but I always hope that one of these times it really will be love...</span>or at least a significant dating relationship!<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">4. I had my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Liz-Fowler" target="_blank">first sale on TeachersPayTeachers!</a> It felt amazing! I truly love creating new classroom resources and it was a little nerve-wracking putting them out there to see if others enjoyed them, too. Now I feel even more encouraged and inspired! They like me, they really like me! :) I have put up a few more items this week, so please come <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Liz-Fowler" target="_blank">visit</a>! </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Liz-Fowler" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2_Ri2rUtMWanitdYerdfRgkvdg0K0S2pEGRsOMwj5kXDTHMUiqEaE8_LzpKMefgV9dM3ziUq61xwD36RkXb5KTBQUyuTer2OGWqAXgDvO5JPm9_OxepPp6VaEZTUIv5WjD4PA_RiTFw4/s1600/TeachersPayTeachers_0.png" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: x-large;">I need to get better about taking photos of my students as they work on our fun projects, but I at least did snap this photo of my wall outside the classroom with our March Madness activity (which was also part of my first sale on TPT). I know, it isn't the snazziest hallway art, but we had a lot of fun working on our skills and talking about basketball!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTNR1raRBwV1Gi4WBAzkRfANDGs21pLISTbNTQFbg1sz3DrhKIjXzegsnhPyFzrIvdMuhs6-Uk8lfA9ae_Pi5bw0JzIfQQTe2hViH_pha3TfwiJx9onGYIu-JB2LhkdSZWd2eEK8Sn6NM/s1600/photo+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTNR1raRBwV1Gi4WBAzkRfANDGs21pLISTbNTQFbg1sz3DrhKIjXzegsnhPyFzrIvdMuhs6-Uk8lfA9ae_Pi5bw0JzIfQQTe2hViH_pha3TfwiJx9onGYIu-JB2LhkdSZWd2eEK8Sn6NM/s320/photo+(1).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">5. Today is the last day of school before Spring Break! <b><u>Whoo-hoo!!</u></b> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Remember in middle school when all of our notes were signed "LYLAS" or "Love You Like A Sister"? Can I sign off on posts that way, too? Let's try it!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">What a perfect Linky Party for someone just starting a blog! The topic this week is to list three things about ourselves or three things we like to do using our initials. Hmm...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Well let me first say that my legal name is Elizabeth but since the beginning of time I've gone by Liz. I'll stick with that for this post, too.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">So for L:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>Lauging!</u></b> I know that's not a super unique trait, but I do love laughing and I think I'm pretty good at it (see, even that awful brag just made me giggle!). I have been blessed by a witty family, hilarious friends and since I teach first grade, I feel like I always have many laughs each day with the kiddos. This weekend I get to kick off my spring break by a girls weekend with my ol' sorority sisters, so I know we will have a ton of laughs together!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">(some of the lovely ladies I'll be reunited with this weekend!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Y- Uhhhh.... Once again, my strange middle name makes something difficult! I think I'll go with the <b><u>YMCA</u></b>. Where I'm from, there are Ys aplenty, so it's hard to find an excuse not to get to the gym. I do love to move around, especially after a stressful day at school. I've found that it is the best at easing tension and taking my mind off of all those things that keep my brain buzzing. My favorite type of exercise is Turbokick, a super-fun class the Y offers. Who wouldn't love dancing and punching away that stress? </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">F - <u><b>Food.</b></u> I love eating, I love trying new dishes, I love cooking, and I love FOOD! I feel like I'm always eating. Let's not forget the beverages that also go with food, such as a strong cup of coffee with a bagel or a nice glass of red wine with dinner at night, which are loves of mine as well. I've also become a huge Pioneer Woman fan - Ree is amazing! </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I love December because of Christmas and holiday cheer.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">But I LOVE March because of March Madness. And Spring Break. Since March Madness usually starts at the same time as Spring Break does around here, I get a nice bundle of fun all at once!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">My students all know what a huge Kansas Jayhawk fan I am and how excited I am when my team wins, so I try to keep a basketball theme going throughout the classroom during this wonderful month. I decided this year to try to incorporate the activities we do into one collection to share with other teachers (hey, I don't want to be the only one celebrating March Madness!). <span style="text-align: center;">I loved working on this packet and cannot wait to share it with my little ones this week! Click any of the activities below or click </span><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/March-Madness-Math-Reading-and-Basketball-FUN" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank">here</a><span style="text-align: center;"> to get your own packet of March Madness FUN!</span></span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEict0UDQDTbt4RC5e9Zc-eteGb5MAat9de7ebEPaN_QnUcf_YOfawog5nHDTLDGpr61qE6QrHVRHJ05I7PwBFBEug4dDW5hlQNasBaqtoZgBU4ZDeQVVX2xK_rcddvze7Mf4Q7bUTzHdhM/s1600/Friday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEict0UDQDTbt4RC5e9Zc-eteGb5MAat9de7ebEPaN_QnUcf_YOfawog5nHDTLDGpr61qE6QrHVRHJ05I7PwBFBEug4dDW5hlQNasBaqtoZgBU4ZDeQVVX2xK_rcddvze7Mf4Q7bUTzHdhM/s1600/Friday.jpg" height="224" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Whoo-hoo!! It's Friday! Seriously, every single week I still get so excited when this day comes around. Don't get me wrong - I love my kiddos - but the promise of a little rest over the weekend is just wonderful.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">We are nearing the end of the 3rd quarter at my school, so we are in a crunch to get all skills checked off and assessed after we had FOUR snow days over the past two weeks. Today, in an attempt to keep energy and morale up in my classroom in between a few required assessments, I reached waaaay back into my memory to come up with some fun activities that would still keep our momentum going. As much as I love learning new teaching methods, I have to admit we had a lot of fun going "old school" today!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Before I describe all we did, let me set the scene: Today was pajama day. Today marks one week until spring break. It was a rainy day. Ok, now I can continue :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">First Oldie-but-Goodie: With attention spans scattered and only about 3 little ones sitting like humans correctly in their chairs, I knew we needed to get up and stretch it out... but we had to take our spelling test before lunch! What do we do?! Why, introduce the students to the game of Sparkle! I know most of you know how this game works (like I said, it's an oldie!) but just in case you've forgotten the rules, I found this <a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Play-Sparkle-(Spelling-Game)" target="_blank">link to explain</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Not only did my kiddos love it, but they were focused and listening to each other (welcome back, well-behaved class!). We were also able to celebrate their fabulous display of good-sportsmanship when we finished our game. The best part of this was I had many wonderful and personal best scores for spelling tests today - SPARKLE worked!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Second Oldie-But-Goodie:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Remember how I said it was pajama day? Yeah, I had to utilize that. When recess was changed to indoor due to rain, I once again pulled out an old trick. I have a bunch of stuffed animals in my reading nook that go along with our favorite stories, so I told the students we would have our first class D.E.A.R - <u>D</u>rop <u>E</u>verything <u>a</u>nd <u>R</u>ead. I let them cuddle up and read to a stuffed animal all around the classroom and they LOVED it! I think sometimes I forget in our fast-paced curriculum just how much students need the opportunity to read at school. Some just love reading, but for others I know school is the only time they are exposed to so many books at their level. It was so cute to see them reading their little hearts out to their stuffed animals!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sometimes, it's good to revisit the classics :)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Have a wonderful weekend!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">P.S. I'm working on my first March Madness math and reading packet for TPT, so check back Monday for a freebie!</span><br />
